Instead of bringing our spinning wheels, we'll bring our drumcarders or fiber or both.

Some will bring fiber to share, and others will work on a carding project of their own choosing. Everyone will get a chance to make a batt to take home and spin into something unique and wonderful, maybe even a fair entry, but that's another topic . . .

Come play on Saturday. ann I amhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06465050527272273353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7825222346487014423.post-69520427590270804072012-03-13T04:48:00.003-07:002012-03-13T04:48:56.816-07:00St Patrick's Day MeetingThe Tulsa Handspinners meet on Saturday, March 17. The program may be the leprechaun's pot of gold as Jeannine will be talking about wheel maintenance so we can keep our wheels running smoothly. The newsletter can be found HERE.

Since it's St. Patrick's Day, and since we're having a meeting, we'll bring edible green stuff to share and have lunch together. So far we're having split pea soup and appropriately decorated delicious cupcakes--what will you bring??

Hope to see you on Saturday. ann I amhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06465050527272273353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7825222346487014423.post-33628744881260085402012-02-25T04:24:00.000-08:002012-02-25T04:24:37.792-08:00What Color Does THIS Make?Gina Levevsque presented a terrific program at the last Guild meeting on the topic of dying with natural stuff, which is stuff you might find around your yard or out in the woods.

Gina is a wild life biologist, spends a lot of time outdoors, spends her free time going to classes and workshops and REALLY knows her stuff. In addition to being a spinner, knitter, stitcher, and weaver, she teaches dying classes at fiber festivals and at the Stillwater Multi-Arts Center. The Guild was fortunate to have Gina do a presentation for us.

The Guild got the benefit of Gina's in depth knowledge as she presented a program for all the senses, except taste. (Annie brought king cakes to share, so taste got covered elsewhere). We got to see a slideshow presentation, listen to Gina speak, and touch and feel samples of wool fabric and yarn she has dyed. In addition, Gina had a dyepot going on an electric burner as she demonstrated the color achieved by dying with pomegranate rinds. Displaying a bit of dyer's alchemy, Gina added a pinch of iron to the pot and viola! and got a deeper richer color of the gold-ish green produced by pomegranate rinds.

Afterward, Guild members got to leaf through Gina's books, shake bottles of lichens, walnut hulls, pulverized bark, and flower buds used for dying while asking Gina repeatedly,

"what color does this make?"

If you want to make your own colors--and you know you do--you can buy natural dye products, mordants, books, etc from Gina.
--You can see (or buy) Gina's dyed fabric and wool or dying materials at her Etsy store--link HERE.
--You can read about Gina's adventures in her blog: link HERE.
-- Other contact information for Gina is available in the February Newsletter, the link for which is found in the post previous to this. ann I amhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06465050527272273353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7825222346487014423.post-48466780503571549922012-02-12T05:29:00.000-08:002012-02-12T05:31:04.618-08:00February Meeting & Natural DyingTulsa Handspinners will meet this Saturday, February 18.

I took level 1 last year and it was amazing. Michelle Boyd will be the
instructor for level 1 and she was wonderful last year. You can read about
the instructors from one of the links. It is under Meet the Team I believe.
You do receive College credit each year after completing the work.

Here are the links below that will explain everything for the Master Spinner
Program. Those that came last year and we had 2 level 1 classes stayed at
the Bothwell. They gave the group a very nice discount. I believe a room
with 2 beds was $59 a night. My phone number is also listed on the off
campus link at the bottom. But just in case it is 660 343 3664. This year
there will be Level 1 and Level 2 offered. Registration opens September 1st
It is in Sedalia, MO. My email is toyfox@embarqmail.com if you have any
Officer elections, program planning for 2011, and Rock Day fiber exchange.
WHAT, you ask is Rock Day and WHAT is the fiber exchange?

GOOD QUESTIONS!

Rock Day or St. Distaff Day is a day of spinning silliness and games sponsored in January every year by the Tulsa Handspinners. Rock Day is a long-standing European tradition which takes place on the first day back to work after the Feast of the Epiphany, or 12th Night of Christmas. According to Rock Day Scholar and Games Mistress Jeannine, the women went back to work spinning a day before the men went to the fields which resulted in young men playing tricks on young women including setting the spinning flax on fire which required the women to douse the flax and men with water--or something like that--this was long before football bowl games. Anyway, at our January meeting we play, have a pot luck lunch, and win prizes.

Fiber Exchange/Rock Day Project--A prize is awarded for the best project made from the fiber exchange and rock. At the November meeting everyone who wants to participate puts 2 ounces of fiber and a rock into a bag along with any embellishments the giver wants to include. The project must include the rock and must be made with the fiber included in the bag and only the fiber in the bag. Everyone at Rock Day votes on the best use of fiber & rock.

Dues are due in November--$20 for the year.
Some guild members will be demonstrating at the Route 66 Flywheelers (antique) Tractor Show on Saturday and Sunday October 16 & 17th in Catoosa at Rogers Point Park. This is the group's 20th Annual Show and for the first time they are including a craft show. We've been asked to demonstrate our antique-ish craft of spinning. Even if you can't come demo, it might be a fun event to attend, and it's FREE!! So, put on your overalls and get yourself to Catoosa.
The library needs to use "our" room for its own purposes on the regularly scheduled date.

The program for the August meeting took us back beyond medieval times to the earliest type of yarn work--nalbinding. Nalbinding pre-dates knitting and crochet and, depending on the way the stitch is formed may look like either one. It has the advantage (or disadvantage) of NOT unraveling.

Belinda and Diana showed us several different stitches and had handmade needles for us to use to try it ourselves. Diana displayed "the beast" a round shawl it has taken her 4 years to make using bits and pieces of her handspun. Belinda had several hats to show us made with different stitches.

Next up??? The program in September will be bobbin lace making with Joyce. ann I amhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06465050527272273353noreply@blogger.com0
