Be Nutty at the October Meeting

At the September meeting, we voted to make the October meeting a spin-in and to hold the meeting at the Route 66 Pecan and Fun Fest at the Nut House on Route 66, outside of Claremore.  Check out the link above for more nutty news and stay tuned for details in the October Guild Newsletter.

We'll be meeting on Saturday, September 15th at Martin Regional Library* from 10 to about 1pm.  

The Tulsa Handspinner's program for September will be:

STRETCHING AND EXERCISES for Spinners with CALISTA.

Calista is a certified Pilates instructor who has great ideas for how we can improve our body mechanics to keep spinning longer and more comfortably.  

* This is not a library sponsored program, the Guild just uses the library space, but all are welcome to attend as guests.

And Now It's JULY!!

The Tulsa Handspinner's meeting will take place on Saturday, July 21.  The program will be on combing wool.  Come and watch the thrilling and chilling use of scary-looking wool combs.

Drumcarding PaRTy !!

On Saturday, April 21, we'll gather at the regular meeting place, Martin Regional Library 26th & Garnett in Tulsa.  Instead of bringing our spinning wheels, we'll bring our drumcarders or fiber or both. 

Some will bring fiber to share, and others will work on a carding project of their own choosing.  Everyone will get a chance to make a batt to take home and spin into something unique and wonderful, maybe even a fair entry, but that's another topic . . .

Come play on Saturday. 

St Patrick's Day Meeting

The Tulsa Handspinners meet on Saturday, March 17.  The program may be the leprechaun's pot of gold as Jeannine will be talking about wheel maintenance so we can keep our wheels running smoothly.  The newsletter can be found HERE.

Since it's St. Patrick's Day, and since we're having a meeting, we'll bring edible green stuff to share and have lunch together.  So far we're having split pea soup and appropriately decorated delicious cupcakes--what will you bring??

What Color Does THIS Make?

Gina Levevsque presented a terrific program at the last Guild meeting on the topic of dying with natural stuff, which is stuff you might find around your yard or out in the woods.  

Gina is a wild life biologist, spends a lot of time outdoors, spends her free time going to classes and workshops and REALLY knows her stuff.  In addition to being a spinner, knitter, stitcher, and weaver, she teaches dying classes at fiber festivals and at the Stillwater Multi-Arts Center.  The Guild was fortunate to have Gina do a presentation for us.

The Guild got the benefit of Gina's in depth knowledge as she presented a program for all the senses, except taste.  (Annie brought king cakes to share, so taste got covered elsewhere).  We got to see a slideshow presentation, listen to Gina speak, and touch and feel samples of wool fabric and yarn she has dyed.  In addition, Gina had a dyepot going on an electric burner as she demonstrated the color achieved by dying with pomegranate rinds.  Displaying a bit of dyer's alchemy, Gina added a pinch of iron to the pot and viola! and got a deeper richer color of the gold-ish green produced by pomegranate rinds.  


Afterward, Guild members got to leaf through Gina's books, shake bottles of lichens, walnut hulls, pulverized bark, and flower buds used for dying while asking Gina repeatedly,  

"what color does this make?"

If you want to make your own colors--and you know you do--you can buy natural dye products, mordants, books, etc from Gina.

February Meeting & Natural Dying

At The Tulsa State Fair

Come visit the Tulsa Handspinners on Saturday October 8 in the Central Park Building near the competitive exhibits.  We'll be demonstrating from 10am to 2pm.  While you're there take a look at the handspun exhibits--Guild members won LOTS of ribbons, including the Sweepstakes Ribbon for Calista.

Remember the meeting this month will be on the 22nd--NOT on the 15th, due to a library conflict.

June Doings

The June meeting/indoor picnic was fun--everyone had plenty to eat and there were some laughs too.  We have some great upcoming programs--check out the newsletter for more info.

The July program will be about getting your spinning entry ready for the Tulsa State Fair, you won't want to miss the program--or the fair entry deadline:  August 26, 2011.  

Check out the Tour de Fleece forum on Ravelry and join in the spinning fun that takes place along with the Tour de France during July. 


Remember the monthly spin in at Barnes & Noble on 71st, near Memorial first Tuesday of the month, from 6-9 pm in the music department--see you there.

Master Spinner Class in Sedalia Missouri

Here is some information Diana received from Luann Stovall about a Master Spinner Class:

 

I took level 1 last year and it was amazing. Michelle Boyd will be the
instructor for level 1 and she was wonderful last year. You can read about
the instructors from one of the links. It is under Meet the Team I believe.
You do receive College credit each year after completing the work.

Here are the links below that will explain everything for the Master Spinner
Program. Those that came last year and we had 2 level 1 classes stayed at
the Bothwell. They gave the group a very nice discount. I believe a room
with 2 beds was $59 a night. My phone number is also listed on the off
campus link at the bottom. But just in case it is 660 343 3664. This year
there will be Level 1 and Level 2 offered. Registration opens September 1st

Let's Rock Roc Day

Saturday, January 15th the spinners will converge with wheels, spindles, challenge projects, and tasty bites in hand for the annual Roc Day event. 

We'll arrive early and be ready to play at 10:15.  Games Mistress Jeannine will lead the spinning mayhem, read us stories and tell us spinning legends.  We'll spin, we'll laugh, we'll vote on each other's projects, have a potluck lunch together, hope to win a door prize, and vow to return next January to do it all again.  I can't wait, how 'bout you?

Time for the Holidays

Tulsa Handspinners will have their Christmas Luncheon and gift exchange on Saturday, December 18 at the usual meeting place--Martin Regional Library, 26th & Garnett, and at the usual time-10am to 1pm.

The Tulsa Handspinners will NOT be having the monthly Barnes and Noble Spin-In on December 6.  There is just too much going on at the store during the Christmas season.
